Stained
Glass Repair and Restoration
Traditional
Stained Glass Windows ('Leaded Lights')
can last for
hundreds of years, but they can be adversely affected by vibration,
physical damage, and shrinkage and expansion, due to temperature
changes,
pollution, or water damage. The result can be broken leads, failing
cement, loose and broken glass and a build up of deposits making the
glass dull or discoloured. The 'saddle bars' (metal rods tied to the
panel with wire) can become detached, losing their effectiveness as
supports.
If a window is to last and remain in sound condition, then periodic
maintenance is required. It is easy to see repair lines which have been
added over the years to old windows. Some will have been removed and
rebuilt several times.
Ramoyle Glass Studio offers a full Repair and Restoration service, including removal and refitting.
We
will assess the damage and provide guidance and estimates for remedial
work prior to undertaking any agreed work.
- Windows
are usually removed for repair, although some minor repairs
can be done in situ. Badly
deteriorated leading may require a
window to be dismantled and rebuilt, using the original glass.
- Painted
panels can be reproduced or repaired, as appropriate.
- We are
able to source a wide range of traditional glass samples
in order to match original glass which is broken or missing.
- A full Restoration service, including
removal and
replacement of windows, is provided by Ramoyle Glass Studio.
- Where
Conservation standard work is
required, the aim is to retain as much original lead and glass as
possible and to document the restoration work.
- Repairs
can also be carried out to Tiffany style (copper foil) glass items.
Below are examples of repair and restorastion work carried out by Ramoyle Glass Studio.
Dunblane Masonic Lodge 2011
Made
up of four panels, the window
was made in 1891 and features two large figures with masonic emblems in
the panels above. The
panels are finely painted and silver stained, with some breakage and a
general
deterioration in condition of the leadwork. The restoration involved
reproducing some painted sections, UV Gluing to repair breaks, and
rebuilding the panels with new leads. The window sashes were removed
with the leaded panels in place. These were then taken out of their
frames at the studio. Because of external glazing, thre was no need for
temporary glazing.
This picture shows damage to the original panel.
The central motif being rebuilt.
This is the repaired top panel - the two bottom right pieces are reproductions of the original broken painted glass.
Below are the
restored lower panels. The inscription at the bottom of the right panel
had been broken and a replacement was painted and fitted.
Callander CARS Main Street Improvements
Ramoyle Glass Studio has
restored a series of historical leaded windows at two shops in
Callander's Main Street - Desirables and The Shell Centre. The
work involved a total of 11 panels, which were removed to the studio
for restoration. To
complete the work and replace broken and lost glass with matching
types, handmade glass was sourced from Germany and France and clear
glass roundels specially made. The improvement work was grant aided by
Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and CARS.

The finished restored panel from Desirables shop
This fine painted panel had
been comprehensively broken. A reproduction was painted and fitted in
its place. The very high standard of painting was carried out
by an associate, Brian Waugh.
